Juneteenth Holiday Celebrated on June 19, 2024

Juneteenth 2024, celebrated on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, marks a special day of remembrance and celebration, as it has been three years since it was recognized as a federal holiday.

Juneteenth: A History of Emancipation

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln two years prior. This proclamation declared the end of slavery in the United States, finally freeing the remaining enslaved African Americans.

Celebrating Juneteenth Today

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated to recognize the end of slavery and to celebrate Black history and freedom. While it has been unofficially observed for over 150 years, it became an official federal holiday in 2021. Many states also recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday.

Juneteenth is a day of remembrance and education, fostering a greater understanding of the history of slavery and its impact on the United States. It is a day to reflect on the progress that has been made towards racial equality and to recommit to creating a more just and equitable society for all.
